Dame Joan will always be the greatest. She brought me to tears when I saw her in this role at the Met in 1986. Samual Ramey was walso singing in the opera. It was worth the flight from the Middle East to New York. Dame Joan, RIP....

Bellini's great opera had not been performed in England for more than 60 years when she sang it in 1960. Though it has returned to standard repertoire, apparently there are posters who think the music was written by Donizetti! (The late great Dame Joan created a sensation singing Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor” in 1959.)

@formby2 this is not the best rendition, but her bell telephone hour rendition, to me, is the BEST of the BEST Vien Diletto EVER ;)

@kngiht84 I agree! The critical people can kiss my ---- Joan was the greatest!
Oh that's just stupid. You obviously never saw Sutherland at all, and I am SURE you never saw Callas. Sutherland had ENORMOUS stage presence. I saw Callas' Tosca and there was a lot of gesticulating and hammy acting. Sutherland was a very stylized actress, definitely, but when she was onstage, you couldn't look at anyone else. What you write is sheer, utter nonsense. 100 years from now, BOTH of these ladies will be remembered.

Oh my word!! This must be the best and most expressive rendition of this that I've EVER heard. God, how I adore this wonderful woman.
What is this broadcast? I don't think it's documented in any of the usual Joan sources is it?
The fluff on the Eb at the end sounds like a tecnical or tape fault to me - definitely not Joan!
Don't think I've heard this version of the instrumental 'play out' before. Is it a Donizetti concert ending or one of Bonynge's?
