Five weeks after grandfather passed away, it is the Chinese custom to send on all that will be needed for life in the next world - a fine house with all mod. cons plus plenty of money for a good time and for such bribes as might be necessary to get through the various courts of the next world. This house had a fine solar hot water system, flat screen TV with pretty girl on the screen, a very lucky telephone number and enough gold, silver and paper money to last quite a long time. His coat was hung over the door of the house and his slippers were placed in the door way. Prior to the firing, a band of Taoist priests arrived with much clamour to perform the appropriate rites. Mourners discarded their mourning robes prior to the firing. They too were burnt as if to signify the end of their mourning period. Everyone played their part with appropriate solemnity - though there were plenty of smiles. I was videoing surreptitiously but I noted that at least one member of the mourning party captured the burning, at least, on her mobile phone.
