On most typical Monday mornings the conversation among colleagues usually revolves around "what did you do last weekend?" or "How was your weekend?" As teachers we have this conversation among other teachers and casually with students. Surprisingly enough students also have this conversation among themselves. As teachers we usually pick up on some of the conversations students are having about their weekends, (from my experience they don't really make much of an effort to keep it a secret). When I hear stories about some of a student's adventures that revolve around drugs and alcohol I cringe.
My Question: Should teachers report or inform parents on what their son or daughter was really doing this weekend? Or as teachers are we to maintain an implied confidentiality with our students to not tell their parents what they don't want them to know?
I think you should do what's in their best interest, especially if they are making poor decisions. They may not thank you for it now but they will in the future.
