On October 12, 1997, pop-music icon John Denver died piloting an experimental aircraft near Monterey, California. He was just 53 years old.

He called his music "Western" and his career spanned more than 30 years with hits including:

Take Me Home, Country Roads
Rocky Mountain High
Leaving on a Jet Plane
Poems, Prayers and Promises
Sunshine on My Shoulders
Thank God I'm a Country Boy
Perhaps Love
Dreamland Express

He sold tens of millions of records and deeply loved "the out of doors".

Denver's hauntingly beautiful music lives on today through his recordings and videos. That gift allows those of us who knew him to continue to enjoy his gift.

For the young, the recordings represent the chance to experience a unique talent they have yet to enjoy.

NOTE:
The Country Roads clip at the end is from John's last TV concert. I was always a fan but I don't think he ever sounded or looked better than he did in that performance. It's available on DVD and CD and the quality is excellent.

  • one part of that bio program was Peter Paul and Mary released his song in 1969 they weren't up and coming they were well established since like 1961. loved the man loved his music R.I.P. John we all love and miss you.

  • @BOBBIE041957 - You are absolutely right. Problem is that too many young people work at these networks and have no first hand knowledge of what they write about and are too lazy to research what they don't know - which is a lot.

  • When I read on the cover of the newspaper that he died in a plane crash, something really hit me hard about his death. I grew up on his music and it always relaxed me as a kid and it put me asleep when I was too hyper. His music was my peace. To this day I am sad that he is gone. It is strange when I travel through West Virginia, I swear I feel his spirit following me as I drive through those mountains.

  • Fortunately, John's wonderful music lives on and thanks to the magic of recording technology, it sounds as good as ever - ready to be heard and enjoyed any time you choose.

  • Happy Birthday, John.

  • That's right mudpro, John Denver would be turning 66 today.

He was born 12-31-43 in Roswell, New Mexico.

Unfortunately, he died in that terrible experimental aircraft October 12, 1997. He was just 53 years old.

  • John Denver used to come into Hayden,Colorado airport when i worked there in there mid 1980's. He had a nice Lear 35. He was always decent and personable. I was shocked and saddened by his death.

  • melissainhawaii....You stated that you last saw John Denver in concert in Hawaii in the spring of 2007...WOW....How did you manage that when he'd already been dead almost 10 years ?

  • @melissainhawaii ...is there any way you got the year wrong there, Missy? : )

  • John will always be with us. His musical genius lives on and I remember him and his music every time I take a walk in the great outdoors and remember his great passion for nature.
