YOUR MISSION (*not* impossible): Vote in the Microsoft Store contest for Sultan Schools to get an IT overhaul worth $10,000+! Please vote every day thru 10/9/2011 @ http://bit.ly/qefLTh (select the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA region)

BRIEF: Updating IT infrastructure at the Sultan School District over past years has required more leaps than incremental steps. The challenge, of course, is keeping hardware and software current. The divide widens at Sultan as many households still do not have computers and applications comparable to even outdated systems at school, while students carry with them powerful mobile devices and are inclined to learn in new ways. The infrastructure disparity amounts to a great challenge for Sultan instructors to lead with new learning models rather than sidestep technology. Realizing that students' access to new technology varies, the Sultan School District Technology department devised a goal to provide "Anytime, Anywhere, Any Device" access on campus and via outreach to homes. The first step (leap, really) is to move school servers out of a mobile trailer and into a secure farm environment. The next leap is to add terminal servers and allow students to connect safely through Remote Desktop Services and Office Web Apps to the tools, folders, and applications they use at school. Remote access clients readily exist for smart devices—Windows Phones, netbooks, and tablets—at reasonable cost to consumers. Granting access to parents' technology of choice can help students connect their school work with everyday computing. Wireless access on campus completes the Anytime, Anywhere, Any Device model, which we hope will reach 500 seats within the completion of the school year if funding can be found. Microsoft Store's contribution would be a generous help.
