This art-deco style, New York Central Railroad's Buffalo Central Terminal train station was built in 1927 and opened in 1929. It's tower still stands 17 stories high. Its best years were from around 1940-the mid 1950's. It closed in 1979 and its worst years were from 1985-1997 when the building was stripped of anything valuable. Vandals and weather also took over the interior and parts of the exterior beauty of this former NYC train station that was also used by Penn Central when the Pennsylvania RR & NYC merged in '68, then Amtrak and Conrail used the station until '79. From 1997-Present Day, the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (which I am a member of) took over ownership of the building. The CTRC has and is restoring various parts of the building.

  • Great stuff, but you've got to remember that a big part of BCT's problem was its location away from downtown and in the middle of nowhere. NYC had a policy of doing that (look at Detroit and Toledo) to save money on land and the result was often pretty disappointing. So, while it's a great building and deserves all the help it can get, it has a terrific economic handicap even today because of its builders.

  • Excellent presentation of Buffalo's history, 5* and fave.
