An excellent performance by Richter, as always. Too bad the sound of this video isn't of that same top quality!

3:05 too heavy for the camera

You really can't beat Karl Richter. What a fantastic organist!

@JeanFonsse Pardon me, maybe not the right word, I admit.
You might be right about the organs too, but I think organists ARE more responsible for the clarity. I've been listening recordings of both artists for long time, feeling Walcha certainly knows the logic, or at least, how to show the beauty of logic way better than him. Richter isn't that pure for better or worse. And I don't care who's German. They are both great players..

@ttwiligh7 theatrical? Please appreciate in the video how the maestro is concentrated on the work. This is not theatrical at all ! I obviously agree that the counterpoint in the 1970 recording by H. Walcha is absolutely logic and emphasize the structure of the whole BWV 582. However, this is mostly because the organ in Saint Pierre le Jeune greatly favors clear counterpoint. After all, both Walcha and Richter are Germans.

I prefer Walcha on this piece.
Richter plays the organ like conducting the orchestra; modern, colorful, and theatrical. while he is good at expressing each moment lively, it is hard for me to concentrate the structure of the whole thing.
The piece is calculated perfectly from the begining to the end, and only calm, strict and pure approach of Walcha makes me understand the true beauty of the logic.
Richter's heaven is up to the sky.
Walcha's heaven is unknown, much harder to reach.

K. Richter e A. Heiller,
non ci si stanca mai di ascoltare, grazie.

@Rovhal1337 most modern day pianists plus the fact they are strictly "players" and know nothing of music, are trained to think homophonically. Their instrument of choice doesn't help.

Wonderful!
I think in the passacaglia - the organpiece of Bach which enters my soul directly - Bach speaks to us through Richter. Played by the man who was almost the reincarnation of J.S. I discovered Karl just recently and are amazed each time by the way he played Bach. Perfect in time, plain and simple at first sight but underneath.. Take the Sanctus in the mass in h-moll. Unbelievable, what an impact! Compared to the modern Bach conductors , Richter is another level.

I really wish we could hear him in person today. It was a great loss to the musical world when he died. Thank you for sharing this with us.
