Security was tight for the beginning of the trial of an alleged Gulf Cartel Kingpin.
Carlos Landin-Martinez, a former Mexican police commander, is believed to have traded in his badge to become second-in-command for cartel's Reynosa operations.
But now, he and another man Luis Martinez-Robledo face a joint-trial on drug trafficking and money laundering charges.
They are among 14 men named in a federal indictment.
Landin-Martinez and Martinez-Robledo appeared before U.S. District Court Judge Randy Crane in McAllen where jury selection began on Monday.
Landin-Martinez was arrested in July when an agent from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration spotted him buying a watermelon at a local supermarket.
