I think he was simple in some ways, because, in the end, this type of beauty has a kind of simplicity. If one doesn't keep a focus on this then the expression can become cluttered, or forced or unnatural. Simple does not mean stupid, it just means focused on the purity that makes artistic beauty special.

Yes, I think it was wishful thinking on this part. If he was that in reality I do not think it would have been possible to be the maestro he was. Thank God he wasn't simple!

I never believed the 'simple' man thing, either.
He said wanted the world to think of him as Nimorino, but I think that was only one part of him.
No real artist is ever simple.

To possess and cultivate an exquisite voice requires the opposite of simplicity. He was exactly the opposite of a simple man - to belong to 'high art' as he did more than anyone else in the world the last thing you can be is a simple man.
