Slipstream is an extension to SAP NetWeaver BPM which allows for real-time Business Activity Management based on complex event processing. This video introduces a demo scenarios and explains how Slipstream can not only be used to monitor but also to start, suspend or cancel processes based on real-time process data. It is a prototype and proof of concept by SAP Research, not a product.

  • At the moment, it is mainly technology. NW BPM does not (yet) enable event sending out of the box. Also, we have not tested our implementation for performance. In terms of skills, the person to define the CEP models still needs to be fairly technical at this point. Process definition stays as is, no problems here. And budget, well budget is always a problem in the end, I guess. I would raise maintenance as an issue also, as the monitoring model is independent of the process model and may break.

  • @fitzecarraldo76: Actually some of the functionality is going to be included in a NW Feature Pack. It'll look different but it's as good as it gets for the moment.

  • Would be a huge win to include this feature in the main product line of SAP BPM, but it seems it got silent around this project.

    However...Research Project?

Solutions like this already exist, e.g. TIBCO ActiveMatrix BPM could push events for any process activiy at runtime for processing in their CEP engine.

  • This is really good. This is how business should run. What are the main obstacles for implementing this technology? Budget constraints, Processes definition constraints, Technology constraints, Skills constraints?
