A refrigerator ice maker works by using a connected water supply to automatically dispense enough water for filling an ice tray, and then calculating when the ice is ready to be dispensed, based on how the ice expands. Learn how a motor in the ice maker rotates to push the ice out of the tray with information from a remodeling contractor and home repair specialist in this free video on appliances.

  • hi, I have a Kenmore SR 1087 363.58042894 side by side door refrigerator. I want to use it without the icemaker installed. So far I've removed the icemaker assembly. The power connector that was connected to the icemaker assembly is exposed. If I powered the unit back on what is the risk of shorting the refrigerator because theres no protective covering? Is there anything else I need to plug up? Thanks in advance. JP

  • I have a question, what is the problem when you get some ice coming out hollow and some normal?

  • hi, could you help? I reversed the refrigerator door as instructed but the weatherstripping has been crushed with the original format. How do I expand the crushed side?

  • It does NOT have an indicator in it that knows the ice has expanded nor does the ice maker cycle on a time basis.

There is a thermostat located in the black head of the ice maker that senses the mold temperature. When the thermostat reaches its set point, its contacts close & start the motor. The RAKE (fingers) pushes against the ice while a heater under the mold warms & releases the ice as the Rake pushes the ice out. At the end of the cycle a switch closes to allow water to refill the mold.

  • Thank you for the information very helpful.

Have a Blessed Day and keep up the good work.

  • replace your water filter

  • Question?what is the problem when the water stops flowing into the ice maker machine.

  • This is a great video... thanks for postingt it. Very helpful.
