Maybe not all good or positively something about colonialisme...specially with the Dutch. A lot of negatif thing was happen in this country, like suffering people for an examples. But if we could honestly with realities right now. Maybe we must blames our self why not keep the "beauty" of our cities..not just jakarta I believe...why we too cocky to not accepted what already had with our cities by the Dutch..

Jakarta or Batavia old time was beautifull city ever made in Indonesia. Not after we freedom or when we still fighting in war, burning houses, cut the trees, bombing every where..with all proud by the arogan goverments they could build again...hah!!! If much better than this...wow...Jakarta must be heaven cities in earth right now...but in a fact is...you could see every day right now...the goverments even the president him self couldn't fix the city just the way like this movie. This is heaven

Thank you for your informative comment. We have to learn more about the history of Dutch colonial rule on Indonesia.

@notaire2 From a medical point of view the canals were a mistake but our ancestors had to learn that things work differently in a tropical country. And the Dutch did learn over time on how to adapt Dutch architecture and urban planning to a different climate.

@SultanZakaria
The Dutch authorities did not make the canals to imitate Amsterdam. At the time of founding Jakarta, there were almost no roads to ship the export commodities. And the temperature was too high to conserve the qualities thereof. But the terrain of the area was very flat. Therefore they made the canals to ship the commodities by pontoons as smoothly as possible. After making these canals the modern roads have been constructed together with the development of motorization.
