South Korea is ready for Green Tomorrow, the house of the future.
This self-sustainable building, designed by Samsung Engineering and Construction, is a zero energy house. It does not use fossil fuel energy nor does it produce carbon dioxide emissions.
According to Samsung Engineering, sixty-eight eco-friendly technologies are applied to the house, such as insulated walls and floor heating. The photovoltaic system is very innovative - solar cells are installed on window blinds which function both as a sunlight protector and as an electricity generator. A wind turbine and a solar hot water system will also provide energy.
[Cho Wookhee, Samsung Technology Research Team]:
"The house can reduce energy consumption up to 56 percent through a 'passive design,' which makes the house use less energy. The rest of the required energy will be provided by a photovoltaic system, geothermal and wind power generation, producing 44 percent of the energy needed."
Green Tomorrow residents can also keep track of its consumed and generated energy thanks to an Energy Management System (EMS). This computerised system identifies home appliances and can turn them off automatically when not in use.
[Cho Wookhee, Samsung Technology Research Team]:
"The house was designed to display overall energy-related information. Such as the amount of generated or used energy, that of carbon dioxide emissions... and the accumulated amount of self-generated energy consumption.
The cost of construction is twice the amount of a conventional house. But according to Samsung, the long-term savings on running costs makes this eco-building a good investment.
Their Green Tomorrow house is expected to be on the market by 2015.
