Memes, lulz & internet culture...Why these things are important, and why marketers might want to pay more attention to what happens organically on the Web.

Alexis Ohanian
Graduated from UVA in 2005 and put his history major to work co-founding reddit.com. Sold it to Condé Nast in 2006 and continued doodle the reddit alien for another three years until retiring for a Kiva Fellowship in Armenia. Founded Breadpig, Inc., an uncorporation that's responsible for bringing geeky things into the world like LOLmagnetz and xkcd: volume 0 -- and donating all the profits (over $160,000 given away so far!). He's also currently the brand & marketing department at Hipmunk.

Christina Xu
In addition to her day job at Breadpig, Christina is also the co-founder of ROFLCon and a trustee of the Boston Awesome Foundation; previously, she has worked at the Center for Future Civic Media at MIT and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. She is delighted by inside jokes that cross borders, clever reappropriations, the social rituals surrounding using technology, and every video about kittens and babies on the internet.

About Respect the Internet
Is marketing ruining the internet? What role can and should companies play in shaping online culture? Will marketing and internet culture ever be able to coexist in a state of beautiful harmony? Is there a middle ground between what marketers want to offer and what Web users actually want? These are the questions we ask ourselves every day at Ketchum, and on December 3, 2010, we brought our brilliant friends together to try to find answers. To learn more, visit http://www.respecttheinternet.com or http://www.ketchum.com.
