Began in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 23, 1967. The precipitating event was a police raid of an unlicensed, after-hours bar then known as a blind pig, on the corner of 12th and Clairmount streets on the city's Near West Side. The Army troops were completely withdrawn by Saturday, July 29.

Photo 1 - This is one of the soldiers at either Burroughs or Cooper school on the east side of Detroit, maybe between Van Dyke and Mt. Elliott - can't remember & the writing was blacked out.
Photo 2 - More of the soldiers at the school
Photo 3 - I believe this was 12th Street, which was the hub of the riot activity, but I can't read that street sign. There were no notes on the back of this one.
Photo 4 - The note on this one says it's "one of the many armored cars on 12th."
Photo 5 - The note says "This car was hit by a tank when occupants attempted to go through a barbed wire barrier."
Photo 6 - The shell of a building on 12th St.
Photo 7 - The note says,"This is also at the school, but it's blurred because, in order to get this picture, I had to climb a very high fence, and I guess I was kinda shaky." It was of some of the tents te Guard had set up.
Photo 8 - Used to be a store on 12th St.

  • I recommend that anyone interested in the 67 riot listen to waketheherd's "Motor City Burning" radio documentary that's posted on YT. Very insightful and balanced about the causes of the riot plus fascinating interviews from people who were there

  • @darrjohn1 Never saw anything video on the 1943 riots whatsoever. There are newspaper articles in the googlenews archives on it, but that is all I have ever found.

  • @BahamutElDiablo There were a couple of incidents where National Guard or police mistook a cigarette lighter for the muzzle flash from a gun. There were a lot of sniper reports, so they were very edgy and ready to shoot

  • @darrjohn1 Blacks beat the hell out of whites as well during 1943. What the hell is wrong with you! Just out of curiosity, what is your opinion of Gay Men.

  • @ChicagoJoe57 Kill you for smoking a cigarette?? Our own military (whose sole purpose of existence is to protect the people of this country) killing it's own people over a cigarette? Obviously I'm missing something here...

  • @thenegas2011 Yeah Willie Horton was in his prime then. He even stood on a car in his baseball uniform trying to tell rioters to stop.
