On Saturday March 11th, 2006 the Montreal Canadiens retired the jersey # 5 of legendary hockey player Bernard Geoffrion, known as "Boom Boom". Boom Boom was the inventor of the slapshot. He also played for the New York Rangers. Unfortunately Boom Boom passed away the day of his jersey retirement. For the record, the Canadiens won against the Rangers 1-0. The goal was scored by Sheldon Souray...with a slapshot.

  • Having the 7 and the 5 go up together left me speechless.

  • Boom Boom's grandson Blake just won the Hobey Baker award, which goes to the top U.S. college hockey player. He will be on the Nashville Predators next season.

  • @YouGotFranked

He will be wearing 57, I believe I read.

  • @Omarkhan77 Nah number 75. 7 for his great grand-father Howie Morenz, and 5 for his grand-father "Boom Boom Goeffrion. both numbers are suspended next to each other on the roof of the Bell Center.

  • @Ched19 And now with the Montreal Canadiens.

  • Blake just got traded to the Habs. I think his jersey number should be 55

  • @WoodyAllenNY - Number retirements are generally planned months in advance.

  • @Ched19 It is almost tragic to see a geoffrion in anything but blue blanc et rouge!

  • They annonce at the begining of the season in a press conference ,that he attend with Dickie Moore an Yvan Cournoyer. He was sick for a long time. Few days before, he knew he was goiing to die. He INSIST for all his family to go to the ceremony even if he had to stay at the hospital. On that morning he past away. The brought is jersey next to his father in law, Howie Morenz. So her wife was watching the jersey of the two most important man of her life floating in the Bell center.

  • Did they plan to retire his number before he passed away that morning?
