The first controller I have tried to use to spin HDD motor was TDA5140 IC. It wasn't very reliable, and it didn't allow to dynamically change rotation speed. Other BLDC controller ICs were either hard to obtain in Poland or not easy to use. So I decided to try an ESC which is normally used in RC models. Here's the result. As you can see it works perfectly ;) On the prototype board there's a potentiometer and ATTiny13. The uC uses ADC to sample potentiometer position and generates PPM signal. ESC interpretes the signal and controlls the motor to spin at the set speed.
Here is the schematic of my setup: http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/2523/attiny13servosch.jpg

  • how much rpm? 7500?

  • @BassaliskVFX didn't measure it but probably matches speed from hdd specification

  • how much was the esc?

  • @KeithWasHere1 $8 @ hobbyking

  • Hi, wich form and frequency the PPM signal has?

    Thanks.

  • @lemorlenny Hello, the signal looks like this: skymixer.engineering.free.fr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74:rc-ppm-signal&catid=51:rc-receivers&Itemid=49

  • @BassaliskVFX thanks

  • @caj420 sure, I have added it to the description. The only external voltage is +12V. Microcontroller is powered from BEC (uC's VCC&GND pins are hidden)

  • Nice work! Can you post the schematic and parts? thanks.
