Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)
Symphony No. 2 in D minor "Elegiac" (1880)
4. Adagio - Allegro moderato - Allegro molto ma non troppo presto
Ulster Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley
The first performance of the Second Symphony took place at a CUMS concert on March 7, 1882 in a programme that included Joachim as soloist in Brahms' Violin Concerto and Joachim's own 'Theme and Variations', with Stanford conducting. After one more performance in the following year the symphony was forgotten until it was revived more than a century later in March 1990 by the Ulster Orchestra. Not only was the music never published, but Stanford did not allocate opus numbers to the first two symphonies.
