Jonathan Martin (1782 -1838) was a York resident who apparently became upset by a buzzing sound while attending evening mass at the Minster on February 1, 1829, there he secreted himself and later set fire to woodwork in the choir. The fire burned for most of the next day, destroying the roof of the central aisle, from the lantern tower almost to the east window (a distance of 131 feet) in a cascade of molten lead. Much of the woodwork in the interior, including the organ and its screen, the tabernacle work, the stalls, galleries, bishop's throne, and the pulpit was damaged beyond repair. Martin was arrested on February 5, and tried at York Castle, and found guilty by the jury but the judge declared him not guilty on the grounds of insanity. He was detained in Bethlem Royal Hospital, (of Bedlam fame) where he created compelling works of art until his death on May 26, 1838.

  • that sounds great, we would need to keep it simple as youtube uses lots of compression which could easily make the words unintelligible
