Dedicated to Lily Smith - a member of my college music group.
This major work, Arabian Caprice, has a very Spanish nationalistic sound that looks back to Moorish themes and old Moorish building such as the Alhambra. This isn't surprising as there was 700 years of Moorish occupation in Tárrega's Spain. The definition of a caprice is a type of music where it is free in form and very light in style. The beginning of this piece is quite dark, with harmonics played over the bass strings, with the E string having been dropped down to D. This gives the impression of large bells being struck. One of the main techniques in this piece is the frequent use of mordents.
