The airway is the passageway between the mouth and lungs. It must be open so air can enter and leave the lungs freely. Blockage of the airway is most commonly caused by the relaxation of the tongue when a victim becomes unresponsive. Tilting the head and lifting the chin will pull the tongue away from the back of the throat and open the airway.
