Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban discusses the benefits of traditional forms of media in an age when content is increasingly moving online. He argues that television and studio films are still the ultimate goals of producers, explaining web video is "a proving ground for bigger things."

Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban and television personality-turned-entrepreneur Brooke Burke talk with Carson Daly about business and social media.

They discuss how to survive and thrive in the world of new media, as well as how traditional forms of media are adapting to the new playing field. - Web 2.0 Summit

Mark Cuban was born on July 31, 1958, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Indiana University in 1981 with a degree in Business.

After college, Cuban moved to Dallas, Texas and created a computer consulting business called "MicroSolutions" which transformed him into a millionaire when he sold the business to CompuServe in 1990. In 1995, Cuban and his business partner Todd Wagner began working on an idea (that later became known as Broadcast.com) in order to stream live events over the Internet.

Cuban and Wagner sold their company to Yahoo.com in 1999 for billions of dollars in Yahoo! stock. Cuban went on to purchase the NBA's Dallas Mavericks basketball franchise for $285 million on January 14, 2000. The Mavericks reached the NBA Finals in 2006 for the first time in franchise history.

Beyond that, Cuban launched the high-definition television network "HDNet" in September of 2001 with Philip Garvin. HDNet provides the highest level of digital broadcast quality available. Cuban and Todd Wagner established a media company named "2929" with holdings that cover many aspects of entertainment.

This includes film production companies HDNet Films and 2929 Productions, movie distributor Magnolia Pictures, home video distributor Magnolia Home Entertainment, the Landmark Theatres chain, and a stake in Lions Gate Entertainment.

  • Television is a cesspool of idiotic distractions. The ruling elite want ya dumb as possible so while you are distracted they wipe out your monetary security and plan to strip the few freedoms left even further.

Put the dinosaur to sleep .

TV will only be viewed by the lowest common denominator.

    Mark..you're an idiot too !

  • Does anyone doubt for a moment that Mr Cuban is a psychopath?

  • What a fucking idiot.

We can watch all that shit over the internet if only the publishers would let us. We can get streaming content or we can download full video. Online video can do everything traditional media can. It's just a distribution medium same as a disc based media or satellite/cable TV.

To be opposed to it is to be a fucking idiot. It's just an issue of how to control the distribution of content, but guess what, TV and film are already on the internet whether you put em there or not.

  • really - who are the ruling elite?

  • HALF A BILLION

    4 20 yr olds

    Carson has interesting numbers.

  • doosh!!!

  • Very well stated RenegadeTimes!

  • Same here, i watch american entertainment "on demand". Can't be arsed to watch pointless translations, months after their original release.

I have the TV running in the background on occasion, but other than soccer i never sit there and actually watch it.

For me it's a dying medium, no question. If the content providers don't change their business model, they won't be making a dime on people like me. Meanwhile i'll appreciate the better part of their content.

  • TV is last century

  • He's right. For now. Eventually production costs will go down in *many* (not all) cases. (large casts, famous performers, licensing, etc will always cost something) But as high quality technology gets cheaper and cheaper for the consumer, quality content will have the chance to emerge in unexpected places. Eventually, inflated productions will no longer be tolerated by the marketplace and value will fall where culture insists it does. But middlemen will fight it to the death.

  • What the hell does Mark Cuban know about online video?
