I started teaching myself how to program a few months ago, and when I found out about Microsofts XNA, i became intrigued. I started learning how to program and then I learned game programming... (still learning) but I threw together a quick tech demo of the project I'm working on. I only used the graphics because I'm working on the engine logic, not the graphics... so the squaresoft graphics will be replaced by the projects end.

XNA RPG tech demo, take 1
Current progress:
battle engine version 1.0 - 40% done
tile engine version 2.0 - 30%+ done?
Inventory engine - 0%
scripting engine - 0%
sound engine - 0%

Enjoy!

  • 1) RPG maker has limitations

    2) RPG maker can not deploy to xbox360 or zune

    3) read the description... this project is me learning how to program and game programming.

Also your comment is like saying to a startup company, "Don't write your own FPS, just mod HL2 lol"

  • cool now if you can just find someone to create some original spites and animations you'll be in business ;-) (not me i am not a pro with that stuff)

  • Mixing Chrono Trigger with Secret of Mana? You deserve an award!

  • @SerrisFerill I disagree. Doing a course doesn't mean you can write maintainable code any more than being self taught usually means that you can't. The ability to demonstrate that you can teach yourself without having your hand held is worth the effort to self teach. All it takes its enthusiasm and a desire to constantly improve your skills.

Long story short....don't knock self teaching.

  • @Omnivoe best place to start is in school. do a beginner course on programming. you can selfteach programming, but code written by a selftaught programmer is usually a lot harder to maintain and adapt.

a good place to start is at riemers.net

  • that in the video is chrono trigger clone

  • @nightwing49766

In Xna or any other "real" programming language you can make you own engine and have unlimmited amound of items, characters, maps, etc. Fine if you want to build on someones engine but making your own engine from scratch gives you much more flexibility, practically you add anything you want for your game. But what might be even better is you can leave out whats not wanted so you save resources. Not that that matters on a tile based jrpg clone :D.

  • like for instance rpg maker vx can have up to 999 of every item and characters and maps and stuff.

  • way to go my friend.

    very good game!

i learned how to make 2d games trying to program a 2.5d beat em up engine ala ninja turtles, ended up writing a finite state machine for it.

    i even made artificial intelligence

my second project was an rpg with an inventory system and real time day/night like in ocarina of time (still 2d, though)

i am doing 3d now, i started like a week ago lol!

  • can you help me make a naruo rpg

  • @Paraguai123: it does have limitations, and i'd prefer to write my own game + engine every single day over rpg maker or any other crappy tool, simply because doing it yourself does many things, not least the satisfaction that you made created something from nothing, rather than using some templates and prebuilt graphics.
