Plot centers around how a young recruit (Audie Murphy) faces the horrors of war. Character vascilates between wanting to fight and doubting his own courage. In midst of first bloody encounter, Youth runs away. After seeing dead and wounded, sense of shame leads him back to his unit, where he distinguishes himself in the next battle. Having overcome his fear of "the great Death" he knows e can face whatever comes. Somewhat sentimental "coming of age" tale was pet project of John Huston, who fought MGM over casting of Murphy and Bill Mauldin in lead roles.

  • The Red Badge Of Gayness'

  • Love the book, I need to watch the movie!

  • ok, john wayne WAS around before murphy... but murphy truly lived the heroism and was still the largest of the western screen stars.

  • what a great scene when the ohioans meet the tennessee rebs.

this film has a wonderful effect of feeling like you are constantly on the move, which is how these soldiers truly lived.

also, everyone loves john wayne and eastwood and the turner films but have forgotten the true greatness of audie murphy. he was the daddy of wayne and eastwood and all the rest who came after.

  • Isn't the youth Henry Flemming..........

  • Fidelity,

  • No Jokes this time Poet?

  • Poet,

At the end of the day, the only way your manage your perception of courage...

The real thing about this period was that the brothers fighting brothers, not sucking votes at the UN, all wrote to their widows when they were mortally wounded that they be remembered as men, because the very worst thing in life in a normal society was leaving this world as a disgusting little bitch, especially with the blood of your own innocent people so you didn't look that way.
