I fell in love with Oostende when I went there to play at the Tazz Fest 2008 with "atabal", a musical group from Puerto Rico. Love Belgium! I hope i can visit again some day...
Yes! I agree with you and that De Panne is a cosy town. But it is very, very different from the Dunkerque region to the west of De Panne, where there is a lot of hooligan youth crime! I was there last May, travelling by bus in the daytime to Calais and I felt very nervous with so many French 'hoodies'.
I don't get what everyone sees in Oostende, but it's still better than Blankenberge, I'll grant you that. No, when I visit the coast it always De Panne or De Haan, they're smaller but infinitely more cosy.
I really love Oostende! The friendly atmosphere, good restaurants and shops, and excellent fish and seafood stalls near the harbour and smell of Waffels, Rombouts coffee and, for the nostalgic, there's a hint of delicious nostalgia with the old buildings!! And the Kusttram is an excellent service too.
