This video shows Charlie Hudson and Eric Snyder of the Vassar College Aikido club performing the 14 Kuzushi Waza---or balance breaking---techniques of Tomiki Aikido for their nidan examination. These techniques are also known as the 14 Nage-no-waza or throwing techniques, although that name is a bit misleading as these techniques are does as a drill to improve timing so as to better break an attacker's balance. The throws that are done in each case during this kata sequence are incidental as the important thing is to get the kuzushi or breaking of balance---after which any number of finishing throws may be applied, not just the ones shown. Kata is the Japanese word for a collection of techniques, or waza. In this clip, Charlie first does all 14 to Eric, and then visa versa.

  • Awful kokyunage.

  • It's not kokyunage. It's a technique called gyakugamae-ate.

  • Thanks I will use this to study for my next grading.

  • good basics, we must try it catching a punch instead of reaching out for the wrist.

  • Not a black betl level.

It is missing the feeling, the ki.

  • @hartos72 the shit in hombu is crap dance too.Like if their crap is useful for anything other than fake spirituality and ineffective martial arts.the whole aikido scene needs to get back to aikijujitsu.Cause this shit is just laughable.

  • seriously?

  • this is an exercise intended to help practitioners learn how to more effectively break balance. these are not intended to be 'techniques" or have street application as seen. also, keep in mind that these are only shodans doing the demonstration. if you know anything about martial arts, you know that new black belts ain't all that great. but they are trying.

it's so easy to be a critic.

  • ballet......

  • Post a video of yourself performing it.

  • how boring. just fookin hit him!! haha.
