I know this is probably a silly question, but im new to this, so... what exactly is eq, and how would you apply it to the recording?

EQ is short for equalization -- in consumer audio, it's commonly used to adjust low and high pitched sounds.
If you've ever used the bass or treble knobs on a radio or stereo, you've used a very basic EQ.
Imagine if you could not only adjust the lows (bass) and highs (treble), but many subtle frequencies in between using a slider or knob. That's a traditional EQ.
EQ allows you to make subtle changes to the overall sound.
