I've seen Mars through a telescope many times and it is infact fairly red (orange) with white ice caps.
Whether or not this is merely due to the fact that there is red dust in its atmosphere is beside the point. Juppiter can be described as brown and it is almost entirely composed of gasses. Earth can be described as blue and green because what we can observe is the land and water. Does it matter what's underneath?

@nikanj I know you've been getting a lot of response to that comment, and I thought I would pitch in with just one small little thought: The question is "What colour is the planet Mars?", and I believe they're referring to it's surface, mostly to get people to say wrong, QI style.
