Here is a behind the scenes look at the editing workflow that I use for editing my music videos. I have come up with a way of editing band music videos using multiclip in Final Cut Pro so you can watch and switch between the angles in real time. This makes editing the video more efficient and so that you can see all the angles together to find the best one to use.

Before editing I convert all my footage into ProRes 442 since this is a native file for Final Cut Pro and allows real time playback even with some effects on. Converting it would dramatically help when using multiclip since each of the video files will need to be playing at the same time and this format will help the multiclip run smoothly.

Groundbreaking Music Video:
I used 3x1000 watt photography lights http://tinyurl.com/4wc4awa as well as 1 work floodlight diffused using a 3-in-1 reflector diffuser. The music was played through my Logitech Computer Speakers hooked up to my phone. The camera was hooked up to my Macbook Pro which I used to monitor and control the camera (focus and start/stop recording) using Canon EOS Utility software. The kit 18-55mm lens for my Canon T2i was used.

I Love You I Hate You
The same lighting as groundbreaking was used as well as 2 more work floodlights. We hired out a place in Docklands called 'shed4' and spent 8 hours filming there. I used my Canon T2i with primarily my 50mm f1.4 lens but for the whole band shots I used the 18-55mm kit lens. For the beach scenes we occasionally used reflectors with the gold tinted side. I used the jag35 X Runner shoulder support with the Monitor X.

If you have any questions about the filming or editing workflow I used please let me know and I will answer them when I read them.

  • what kind of edit program you are using ?

  • @AlberTaRoNoV It's mentioned multiple times in the description.

  • does your final cut or adobe premiere preview window lag or is that just a sony vegas flaw?

  • @MichaelKhanTV Mine does not but it may not be a flaw, your computer may not be powerful enough to render it in realtime.

  • @drakecool2k And if you have any other questions feel free to post them on my facebook page facebook.com /dillonpearcemedia

    1. Which video are you talking about? Generally I don't even need to use After Effects. The green screen one I did but I did the After Effects work first then rendered and brought into Final Cut. The others I just use Final Cut or Premiere Pro and thats it.

    2. B-Roll is when they are not singing, so no I don't tell them to 'sing it out'. I just shoot extra footage in 60fps.

    3. I color correct last but there is always tweaking back and forward to make it look right with effects.

  • @dillonp23 thanks for the reply.

nice workflow but i have three questions.

    1. I guess you edit first then render it out then take it to after effects and add effects. Is that how you do it.

    2. Is about the filming. how do you capture your b roll. you just tell them to sing it out and then capture b roll because i think you used one camera. 3. when do you do your color correction and grading/tonality . before effects or after. and if it is after doesnt that after the look of the effects.

  • @drakecool2k Yeah I use PluralEyes too. Come to think of it I may have for this project. If theres only a few tracks though it is faster to do it by hand because theres too much messing around making new sequences etc for pluraleyes.

  • @dillonp23 hey bro stop looking at the waveform and look for something called plural eyes it makes this job 500% faster and easier and faster.
