Canam Group 1960-1969: Early beginnings

Canam Steel Works Inc., the group's first entity, was founded on August 15, 1960 by Gilberte Lacroix-Dutil, Roger Dutil and an American investor, Albert Goldberg. The word Canam, which is a fusion of the first syllables of Canada and America, was created after the name St. Georges Steel Works Inc. was declined.

Construction of the 12,800-sq. ft. plant in St. Gédéon de Beauce began in the winter of 1960-1961. Fabrication officially started on May 5, 1961 with a dozen seasonal employees.
