@OperaVince This composer alternately accelerates, and then then slow motions the finale of La valse. Bernstein is the conductor that performs La Valse perfectly, regardless of what orchestra he is conducting.
@alvinlee10ya Some believe La Valse is something of a tone poem depicting the beauty of the waltz initially, proceeding toward an orchestral picture of the devastation of war. I quote one writer who calls the ending "one of the most terrifying passages of music ever written. Some musicologists — consider the horrifying ending as Ravel's expression of the old Europe's destruction by World War I." Its anquish has really hooked me. It's my favorite orchestral piece.
@alvinlee10ya , No, his original concept for the piece was to create a short ballet. He composed it for the Ballets Russes--However, Serge Diaghilev dismissed it, declaring it an expression of the 'concept' of ballet rather than something that could realistically be danced. Incidentally, Ravel stopped speaking to Diaghilev over it, and you can find at least one version of the danced piece here on youtube (an excerpt) with Daria Pavlenko.

Is it me, or does the conductor look like he's trying to get them to go faster? Sometimes the orchestra seems almost a whole beat behind him.
