On Sept. 21, 2010, officials from MMI Preparatory School in Freeland broke ground for a new library which will expand the school's campus for the second time in fewer than 10 years.
Construction will soon begin on the Joseph A. Turri Library, named after the alumnus from the Class of 1945 who donated $1.4 million toward the project, said MMI President Thomas G. Hood.
The new library is one part of a $7 million capital campaign that MMI publicly launched just two weeks ago. The capital campaign is raising money for the construction of the library, as well as a new outdoor athletic complex featuring baseball, softball, and soccer fields, as well as a nature trail and study area for students and residents of Freeland and Greater Hazleton. The campaign will also help further fund endowment, which assists families who are in need of help with tuition for their children.
This is the second expansion of the MMI campus within the past 10 years. In 2001, a $6.5 million capital campaign funded several projects, including the Marotta Hall for Science and Technology, the Athletics and Drama Complex, the Mildred Kulp Kahler Courtyard, and the Coxe Commons.
