This song is about a young man who hanged himself while listening to a tape of himself singing another Staind song ("Outside"). His mother approached lead singer Aaron Lewis after a show in Detroit, having found him by the ticket her son left behind. The song notes Lewis' sadness and anger over the event; the loss of a young life is personally tragic to him after his own bouts with suicide. This song perhaps highlights and connects the albums prevailing themes of parenting and social stresses escalated by broken lines of communication between parent and child. (songfacts.com)

EDIT:

Q:
How can this song be about someone committing suicide to the song 'outside'?'Waste' and 'Outside' are on the same album...

Outside by J-Cat (Aaron Lewis´ band before Staind)

E2: "The Q&A are still wrong, Aaron wrote Outside with Jcat a while before Break the Cycle came out.. But Aaron And Durst Played it like that time, And that LIVE version got tons of radio time, 2 years before the CD came out... So the kid who committed suicide was listening to the Aaron and Fred version on the radio" - staind420

  • And fuck you

For not having the strength in your heart to pull through

I've had doubts, I've had fears

I've fucked up, I've had plan

Doesn't mean I should take my life with my own hands ...

this is the only thing that keeps me alive. thanks staind

  • @MrNaong I was told the reason he said that in the song is because HE was being blamed for the kids suicide by the kids family. Thats why he said what he did at the end. And Aaron Lewis has a very dark past himself. Hes been where that kid was, but he pulled through. He didnt kill himself. Thats why the lyrics in this are kind of rough.

  • Amazing song!!! I love how he uses his music to express what he can't say. A lot of people want someone to blame for the persons actions but in actuality its no ones fault. Depression is an illness and sometimes families don't realize the person is depressed. Couple of months back a very close member of family committed suicide and we did everything. Took him to Dr got him on meds but they didn't work. In the end no one is to blame its their choice. :'(

  • 3:00

    Shit gets real...

  • great song, nice vid and tnx 4 the upload.

  • Fucking amazing

  • Amazing song & performance. If there's anyone who knows how to speak from the heart, it's Aaron Lewis. This song is very sad, but meaningful. I can see Aaron's perspective when he was blamed for something he never set out to do. The weight on his shoulder must've been hard. Music has always been his escape for expressing things he can't express very well through conversation. It's also done great things for others, though. He can do some amazing things just sitting with an acoustic guitar

  • It was actually a boy that never played the guitar in his life. He went and bought a guitar and learned how to play the song "outside", then committed suicide while playing a recording of himself playing "outside". It's in Staind's documentary "The making of Staind"
