Both planes were great fighters, I have not seen any documents on what plane would overtake the other. I believe the P51would overtake the F4U because of the
P51 higher speed and is a little smaller airframe and probably a little more agile in the sky. P51 Average top speed is 437.
F4U Average top speed is 417.
Check out the Reno Air races, They use mostly P51's and the Hawker Sea Fury the Mustang has Its hands full against the Sea Fury but the planes are modified.
