http://fiat500usa.com Fiat is a leading proponent of methane fueled cars. Read about this technology that, with any luck, will come to America. Translated script courtesy of Fiat group Press.

CEO, FIAT Automobiles

It's trendy to be ecological today. The younger generation of consumers has grown up with differentiated waste collection. Years ago we used to say "turn the light off because it costs money". Today we are more likely to say things like "turn the light off because we mustn't waste energy; turn the tap off because we mustn't waste water; don't use so much because it's an important resource." Young people today, and especially women, are already tuned into the idea of looking after the planet and being careful about the environment. Because respecting the environment is trendy, we can honestly say that buying a methane fueled car is trendy, too.

Filippo Solibello
Caterpillar host - Rai Radio 2

I'm convinced almost fanatical in fact about the benefits of driving on methane, for a very simple reason. Methane provides an immediate solution here and now to the two biggest crises facing us all today: firstly the ecologic, environmental crisis and, secondly, the economic crisis that is hitting us all in our pockets. By driving a methane fueled car, you pollute less and you save more, too, so there's absolutely no reason not to!

Lorenzo Sistino

The biggest fears customers have today are related to safety issues, but this is simply because there is not enough information out there. These fears are completely unfounded because methane is actually safer than petrol, and safer than LPG too. In fact, the chemical characteristics of methane are such that, when it comes down to safety, only diesel is better than it. If we add ecology to the equation, methane is the most ecological fuel currently available. That is why you can drive a methane fueled car in city centers, in areas of restricted traffic and even in situations where most cars are completely prohibited. And methane costs less, too, up to 50% less than petrol. The Grande Punto is a case in point. Today, thanks to incentives for buying a methane fueled car even if you don't scrap your old one, a new methane fueled model costs no more than a petrol equivalent and you start saving money from the very first mile. Fiat was the first to invest in methane technology. The Multipla dates back to 1999 for example. Since then we've been gradually introducing methane technology throughout our range. Today you can choose methane versions of the Panda, Punto, Grande Punto and, of course the Multipla and Doblò, too.

And because we design and build all our methane fueled cars in our own factories, they have to pass exactly the same safety and emissions tests, including crash tests, as any other new model. We've gained a lot of experience over these last ten years and I can honestly say that by now Fiat's methane technology will take some beating.
