The Cross symbol long predates Christianity (in its current understanding in the West).

In Egypt, it was called both Merkhet (staff of knowing) and its head piece was called Ankh. The Cross (staff with a cross piece) is Vedic in origin, and was used as a means of taking 'star shots' at night. (height above ecliptic and angle relative to ground position)
