  • This is the problem with a lot of the No comments on here like paddymourinho's. It shows their heads are in the clouds in relation to the reality of everyday life. They spout poetry and they refer to Ireland's past. These people seem closeted from the real world where you have to put bread on the table at the end of the week. We can all reminisce about Ireland's past when we have all emigrated if they have their way. They are nothing more than a bunch of dreamers and escapists!

  • I am aware of the ''reality of everyday life''. The difference is, you have got yourself trapped in the game, and because you are so involved in it, you judgement has become so warped that you now actually believe that it is better to be controled and have food, than be free and have responsibility...Its very sad.

  • Thank you all for your support over the last few weeks. For those of us who feel disheartened at the cowardice of the irish people, I point you to an excert from a poem by W.B Yeats

What need you, being come to sense,

But fumble in a greasy till

And add the halfpence to the pence

And prayer to shivering prayer, until

    You have dried the marrow from the bone;

    For men were born to pray and save;

    Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,

It's with O'Leary in the grave.

  • I notice a lot of people under the age of 30 are against the EU. They clearly don't know what it was like before Ireland joined the EU. The EU was the body that truly made Ireland an independent nation. If we vote no and as a result the investors leave the country then you guys can just leave the country as you are young enough. As for the rest of us, you will of just condemned us to economic oblivion. Vote yes for our children's future.

  • The EU made Ireland an independant nation??

I was under the illusion that WE made Ireland an independant nation!

I am also of the opinion that the EU are doing all they can to make sure Ireland become a DEPENDANT state in a european independant country. There are more important things than job investments....freedom for one.....wake up man, join the right side of history.

  • best of luck

  • Hey man, luck means nothing. Get up off ur arse and DO something if you really care about this...

  • Sorry for saying this but you're really cute!

  • The votes made by our elected MEPs are no more than suggestions to the unelected Commission.

From the same response: "The Parliament is a consultative talk-shop with very little real power,

"The Commission is not bound by the Parliament and if it rejects a proposal it (the Commission) can, and often does, re-introduce it again at a time of its choosing."

Democracy in the EU? Not a prayer.

We do live without a constitution. It's terrible.

Tony Blair is a truly terrible person.

  • Our elected MEPs hold no real power in the EU.

Unelected bureaucrats truly wield the power in the EU.

An official response I had from one of my MEPs spelled it out explicitly:

"the EU Parliament cannot propose any changes to the law. That prerogative is restricted to the unelected EU Commission on which the founding and subsequent treaties confer the sole right to instigate new legislation. They are the only EU body with the competence (EU speak for power) to do this."

    UNELECTED!

  • I have nothing against English people

I admire english people, I lived and worked with them for a long time.

    more power to Tony Blair

    you'r wrong about "unelected people"

It is you who lives in a country (UK) without a constitution....

  • Freedom is of utmost important.

Did you ever hear the expression that it's bettedr to live free than to die a slave?

If your logic is correct, and it isn't, but if it was, the mistake Éire made was gaining freedom from British rule.

Freedom, not to be told what to do, or to decide with the rest of the club... but to decide for YOURSELF.

The Yes vote just means unelected people with their ENGLISH president tell Éire what to do... again.

  • As so where it all went wrong, then, was getting independance from the British crown?

    Nonsense!

Switzerland is a tiny place and being completely independent they prospered MASSIVELY. They did it by providing an environment that encouraged business.

No need to join a federal european state and, for the first time in 60 years, have an ENGLISH head of state.

Éire no more needs to be in the EU than it needed to be in the UK.

Éire go brách seems further away now than in living memory.

  • Nonsense.
