This is a conflict between man's need to explore and man's obsession with order. Proog knows these different pieces of technology in The Machine and is in wonder of them as they progress. He is crazed by his own perception of what is and isn't safe to the point that when Emo tries to deny his way of cold unquestioned machinery, Proog attacks him. Emo is the exact opposite. He sees nothing in The Machine and wishes to explore the possibilities outside its bounds and expand its pathways.

You know i actually think that when you look at the beginning it appears it starts with the end after he hit emo, and he is reliving the moment he spent with emo, who may also be in a lunatic asylum, and maybe this proge guy is also a lunatic doctor who either still has access to this machine thing, or THINKS HE DOES, hence the reason emo can't see the place or the machine.

An old demented man on his death bed invites a young man to see things from his perspective. He takes the young man into his mind and together they go on a tour of his imagination. They travel through the old man's mind, going through his memories, his beliefs, and his dreams. Along the way the young man can't help but notice it is all the same. All clockwork machinery and no grass, no sky, no hope. There is nothing there. He tries to escape, only to remain forever- in the elephant's dream.

I see this as curiosity vs ignorance,questioning vs establishment. Emo is curiosity and questioning,while Proge is ignorance and establishment. Emo questions everything,and wants to know whats behind everything,while Proge tries to restrict with his establishment what is wrong and good, and ignores the lonely and cold place he lives. Emo attacks with change, while Proge beats him for such thing as he wants to live a lie. This is what happens in real life,and we realize when it's late,like Proge.
