If you use John Hollinger to see where Ben Wallace ranks in the all time greats, then maybe it is you that doesn't understand.
He shows us who is performing the best, that's it. You don't need him to see what a player needs to improve on, that's not his forte. His strength is showing us the PER of NBA players, that's all.
It's like me saying Jordan isn't the best because he only averaged 1-2 blocks in his career. That's not his forte, so don't look at him where he isn't specializing.

He does take defense into account, he tries to take EVERYTHING possible into account. We all know that this isn't the clear cut way to decide on who's best, but it does help to guide people in the right direction.
