The fire station in our village is usually a fairly quiet place.
During the summer the benches outside are often occupied and the shop will sell a few items.
This building, constructed by the villagers themselves from money raised through their own efforts, laid its foundations in 1983 as a center for the previously established fire service in Bukovlje.
In 2007 it celebrated 30 years of service and in that time it had extinguished some 335 though most of these were forest fires.

But tonight in the DVD Bukovlje the AGM will be held and to which all its friends from across this district have been invited.
What is so remarkable about those firemen and fire women taking part is that they do so entirely voluntarily, and what is more even pay for the privilege through a subscription. For those who wear the uniform it is worn with great pride.
The AGM is an important event in the calendar and the President of the DVD Bukovlje, Ivan Fudurić, who is also our postman, will lead the proceedings.
The national anthem will be played, followed by the anthem for the fire service. Then there will be a moment of silence while those firemen from the village, who died during the Homeland war of the 1990s, are remembered.

Upon opening the meeting the President will welcome everyone naming those village fire services present that have been drawn from the whole district.
He will also mention the various societies among the assembled company and this will include the woman's cultural group, Bukvice, which has organized an exhibition for this occasion.

There is a full agenda. New appointments will be voted on, agreed and carried. Following on from this the Secretary will be invited to give an account of their work, including the number of fires extinguished over the previous year.

The Treasurer will give a statement of the yearly accounts and the results of both will be met with a great deal of approval and praise.
Next will be delivered a statement from the President of the local football team. His speech will be a touching testament of the close ties that exist between both organizations since many of the team's players are also firemen.
And every speech given tonight will conclude with a line that is almost a motto for the fire service, 'što manje pozara' even fewer fires.

As institutions go the woman's cultural society, Bukvice, is very young indeed, less than two years old.
Tonight they are showing a small exhibition of their work and here Slavica Benić-Krivačić explains its function...

After a while the sound of live music begins and invites everyone down to where the evening's entertainment has begun.
These are a resilient people and while many families have had to face great economic hardship, after the war destroyed the nearby cotton factory upon which so many depended, there is a tremendous spirit among those present.
And as we leave we are reminded once again of those who could not be present tonight, yet somehow they are always present and are always among friends.

Great to see in Bukovlje these outlets for civic pride and community connection. I admire how involved they are and am especially interested in the newer women's cultural society. Their work reminds me of things I have purchased over the years at Greek festivals in my area and more recently, the Russian festival. I'd love to tote one of those bottle bags while calling on a friend. Nice work, especially the grace note at the end for those who have passed but who remain connected. :)

@PoemsBeingRead Thanks, James, it is great to read that these films are appreciated. When so many people left the village in the past in favour of the city it is gratifying to see that these community ties still hold strong and people are being pro-active to preserve their history and future.

@Caspar33 Thanks, Fred, I enjoyed this comment very much. I agree that the forces of the community seem very strong in our village. Someone commented earlier that in this film one can see the hierachy that exists, well, people might not agree but I think because of that the village is stronger. Everyone has a place and each person is aware of it. It is that certainty, I think, that gives it it's strength.
