MIDDLEBORO — Jean McMahon sobbed today as she stood at the scene of a single-car crash that killed her son and another teen hours earlier.
Rain continued to fall early this afternoon as teens stopped by the scene, some hugging McMahon during her brief stop there.
Police said speed, weather and driver inexperience contributed to the 7 a.m. crash that killed Joseph W. DeYoung, 18, and his passenger, Brian McMahon, 17, as they headed headed to classes at Middleboro High School.
Young failed to negotiate a curve and hit a tree near 107 Purchase St., according to police. He was driving a 1996 Saturn.
The teens were pronounced dead at the scene. It is unknown if they were wearing seatbelts.
They were traveling south on Purchase Street in heavy rain. Neighbors reported the crash. Trooper Peter Bengston of the state police accident reconstruction team and Middleboro officer Jerry J. Donahue are investigating.
Police said DeYoungs driving status advanced from a junior license to a full license last week, allowing him to carry passengers.
As the community learns of the tragedy, McMahons family is working with the Red Cross to reach an older son, Nicholas McMahon, a Marine serving in Afghanistan.
