He challenges the Samurai, but didn't kill him. They dueled, and Mimura sliced his arm off and let him go.

Later in the movie Mimura and his wife reconcile and get back together, while the samurai he dueled didn't tell the authorities who dueled him. Later the high influential Samurai (forgot his name) committed seppuku.

This is a good movie. He was a food taster at the castle and he ate poisonous shell fish and it made him go blind.

AS the movie progresses he finds out his wife was "cheating" on him with an influential Samurai so he can continue to get paid. He divorces her, but later finds out this influential Samurai was only taking advantage of her and didn't secure his rice rations through the castle. The lord himself did so because he ate the food that was poisonous saving his own life.
