Masks of Death - Famous Dead People

Death masks are made simply by putting a form fitting material around the face after death. Everything from Wax to Bronze has been used, but these days it is more often plaster (or some off shoot). Death masks were around before Photographs became popular.

I could imagine when they first started doing this .. the mistakes the masker did.. I could imagine the masker telling the loved ones.. "I'm sorry but it stuck to their face!"

That mask of Abe Lincoln was his life mask. His death mask had the eye lids etc and show the aging of his face.

@MsTruNorth She was 44 at the time of her beheading. Maybe they put the wig back on her head when the death mask was made and maybe the white cloth thing might the bag they put her head on.

Their is a museum of plaster casts made 1960's-1980 by two women that specialized in male rock stars uhm organs.

@imakemovies99 Actually the no-whiskers mask of Lincoln shown here was taken just after Lincoln was elected President. A second life mask (with whiskers) was taken two weeks before Lincoln was murdered. No death mask was ever done of Lincoln.
