Do you have any book reccomendations into differentiating sympathy, compassion and empathy?

If your empathy is conditional and if you get upset when someone else "rejects" your attempt at offering empathy, chances are it wasn't empathy to begin with. Empathy is a gift you give with no expectation of anything (approval, feedback, attention) in return. It can only be empathy if it's totally unconditional. Also note: "threatened" is not an emotion. It is an interpretation of what you think someone is doing to you. People are constantly mixing up feelings with thoughts/interpretations.

narcissistic children and adults are not capable of empathy, believe ME!

I am married to one and raised a daughter who somewhat lacks empathy and now a granddaughter I am desperately trying to teach this to...it usually leaves me with scars from her biting me!

Empathy is an impossible standard. We can never understand what we do not know. Empathy is impossible for the same reason that telepathy is impossible. We cannot read brain like a computer's hard drive. We certainly cannot network human brains at this point in time. As long as it impossible for you to guess what I am thinking or feeling exactly empathy will be impossible. Should empathy be possible is a scientific and ethical question. I wouldn't care to know the thoughts of another.
