I think the engineers seeded life on earth, allowing it to evolve naturally with the assurance that in 2000 yrs humans would come to fruition. The engineers came bk periodically to check on their creations, with the plan of basically carefully spear-heading man to sentience, perhaps in the hope we would eventually one day reach their own levels of vast Intellect. So the engineers taught our ancestors the very first early tribes of man. And we worshiped the engineers as the true Gods.

It is deep, people have completely misunderstood. At the heart of Prometheus is themes of evolution against creation and it asks the question whether the two may actually go hand in hand. Its not perfect there are flaws, but Ridley has simply tried to make a movie that on the outside tries to appeal to the mainstream audience, it has some action, violence all those elements, but underneath theres much ambiguity. Holloways rubicks cube is Ridley giving us a real puzzle of a movie to work out.

Here's how; There's an immaculate conception in the film, they constantly evoke the question of what we did to anger the engineers, the 2000 yrs thing, and then most obvious of all, the film is set on Christmas. It's actually a really obvious implication.
