This is a very RARE event on the South Texas Gulf Coast. The date is December 04, 2009. It's not even Winter yet! This is the first time in Port Lavaca's weather History that it has snowed this early in the year. The instruments shown at 1:33 are an electronic temperature sensor and a rain gauge which are both Official instruments of and belonging to the National Weather Service Field Office Corpus Christi TX which I maintain and record official weather observations for the National Weather Service COOP Observer Program at my home in Port Lavaca, TX as a matter of historical climatic data for Port Lavaca, Texas. At about 2:58 in to the film you will see what is called a "Snowboard" which is also an instrument of the NWS. It is of a specific size and is used to measure the accumulation of freezing precipitation. What you see was what I reported. Basically a trace of slush. Notice behind that behind the weather instruments are established tropical plants that include a stand of Bamboo, Banana plants, Elephant Ears and a Palm Tree as well as Peach and Loquat trees. A squirell can be seen scurrying up a Palm tree in one portion of the film. Also notice the many puddles of water. This was a very wet mixture of snow, ice pellets and rain. Rain began around sunrise with the temperature falling from the fifties into the thirties through 10:00 when it finally stopped raining for a quarter of a hour. We recieved our first ice pellets mixed with snow at 10:17, a light rain almost immediately returned to the mix. The temperature was watched intently and remained at only 34 degrees throughout the afternoon and none of the snow was allowed to accumulate. The event finally ended with final traces falling shortly after 3 p.m. Total duration of snow event was about five hours. This is only the second time it has snowed in Port Lavaca this century. In the final moments of the clip, the actual footage audio is included and you can hear the wind and precipitation hitting leaves as the music fades. I haven't confirmed it yet, but it's rumored that this is the earliest it has snowed in Port Lavaca since historical weather observations began here.
