Matt has the vision of Bruce in the sense of efficiency. He is right indeed.

@XBlastburnerX Same thing happened to me with bujinkan

I agree with this video. Very well put. However, you must consider some things. Can you imagine people in thier 40's, 50's, and 60's sparring full contact? Or what if a student has joint problems , or other health problems? Constant full contact training will rack up injuries too. I think lower intensity mixed with occasional high intensity is best. still.....even if your doing low-intensity sparring/drills, as long as they are "alive" and un-rehearsed, I think the person will benefit.

Don't use aikido as a synonym for 'dead training dojo' it degrades the system even further than the aikidance camp already has. While I have gripes with the training methods of aikido, it's technically sound and far from worthless, it just needs live sparring to drive the principles home. I was lucky enough to train in a wrestling club before taking up aikido, aliveness was always a 'no duh' factor to me.

@XBlastburnerX Cool! muay thai is great too. basically, anything alive is good - boxing, muay thai, judo, wrestling, bjj. it's no coincidence that virtually every modern MMA fighter on the planet trains some combination of those arts (or some alive variant), because it has been pressure tested and it works. you could call it the scientific method.
-
@XBlastburnerX I had "nearly" The exact same experience. When certain training partners would resist, I would slide right into another technique, or variation of and be successful.
Then the instructor would come over and reprimand me. Sometimes he would tell me,"You're doing Judo" or something stupid. It mustve been, because I actually made it work, lol.
I actually learned how to pull these techniques off from training with BJJ guys who wouldnt whine because I was being rough.

@patrickhenrysghost When I was training aikido I tried to resist the technique a few times. My training partner wasn't used to this and could not execute the movement. I was told to relax and bullshit like that. Other martial arts were treated inferior and were generally disliked. I won't call them arrogant douchebags, but they act like they know it all, while in reality they know nothing. I'm glad I quit.
-
@yanapingu I made that post so others would know about what happened to me and would come to a conclusion. I quit aikido, and continued muay thai. I train muay thai 2-3 times a week and the results are noticeable. I've been thinking about joining a judo club, but I'm already busy with muay thai. I might do judo later. There is no brazilian jiu jitsu or any other alive grappling where I live besides judo, yet.
Have a nice day and train hard.

@XBlastburnerX Same here. Aikido does have some useful techniques. But the training methods suck out loud. And the black belts wouldnt listen for the life of them, even though a Judo yellow belt could walk through them.
Really, the pre-requisits for gaining high rank in Aikido are saying yes to everything, being 100% compliant all the time, and being an arrogant douchebag who cant back up his words.
-
@XBlastburnerX hey man, that's a really gutsy honest attitude - I really respect that, and I hope you have indeed switched. In judo you will learn to throw people who don't want to be thrown and are resisting you 100%. when you can do that, you know it's for real. you should check out brazilian jiu jitsu too and you will learn how to apply submissions on a fully resisting opponent. that live sparring is the crucial difference. all the best
I trained aikido for 6 years now. 1 year ago, after seeing aikido being bashed all over the internet, I decided to take one class a week of muay thai and prove to myself aikido was awesome.
It's hard to face the truth. I wasted 6 years of training something of no real value... It took me 10 months before I accepted the truth. I'm thinking of switching from aikido to judo now.
You can still practice aikido for the art or something. But if you want to learn how to fight, then don't.
