Mikhail Kalatozov (1903-1973) was a Sovjet movie maker who filmed some unforgettable scenes on natural locations. The two staircase scenes appear to me unique in their dynamism. Both scenes seem to have a similar symbolic meaning - young men who make a desicion, act upon it vigorously and feel their resolve weaken the higher they get.
In Летят журавли (the cranes are flying, 1957) young Boris follows his lover up the stairs to her apartment -and the camera follows him in the stairwell for two stories in one continuous shot.
In Soy Cuba (I am Cuba, 1964) a young man climbs to the top of a modern building in Havana with the plan to assassin someone from up there. He is beset by the tunes of a street musician.
Watch also : "I am Cuba" a film made by Kalatozov and operator Sergei Urusevsky and using acrobatic camerawork by Alexandr Kalzaty. Masterpiece of USSR cinematography !!!
