It is 1933, during the Depression, and being Christmas Eve, the Walton family are in the midst of their Christmas preparations and hoping to celebrate it together. The problem is that there are many events which seem to prevent John Walton (Daddy) from arriving home to share this Christmas with his family.

  • Wow, 'Away In A Manger' has a completely different tune in America than it does in the UK! It's almost a complete opposite, infact.

  • The broken doll scene made me sad too because I was the character Elizabeth's age when I watched the premier of this movie.

  • @brendaleake

That is the part that got me too when I was a kid, I was 9 years old when this came out. The interactions with each other...special...about the doll...Hey, I can fix that!!

  • I think the missionary woman's "recipe" she consumed earlier in the evening was really kickin' at 2:45.

  • @candlelight482 I never did get that part either. Slam, bam, and not even a thank you maam!

  • I remember watching this on tv when I was 15 :)

  • John Boy sounded so adult when he told his Granpa he was going to find his Daddy.

  • @tenagnek I know that, being poor and the government handing out assistance has nothing to do with it, there's no excuse for bad manners

  • @candlelight482 They were depserately poor, and this was before the government provided basic assistance to the poor.
