If you cannot hold your dogs attention and teach it to filter out distractions it becomes very difficult to teach them anything efficiently.
This is Culebra's very first lesson learning the place. He is a high drive happy athletic pup. We certainly do not want to change that. We believe in happy dogs under control.
Here you see me training Culebra in drive. I began by playing tug and I will finish the session by playing tug.
Notice that I maneuver him to help him understand and release him only when he looks at me. There are a couple of dogs in the room that provide good distractions for him to make choices allowing me the opportunity to funnel his attention back to me.
During the initial introduction of the "place" drill -- it really does not matter to me - if he is sitting, standing or laying down, as long as all four paws are within the boundary and he is staying there on his own even just for a second. We mark the correct behavior with the release and will eventually make him work longer and longer for it.
You are only limited by your imagination on what a "place" can be. The wider variety of "places" you introduce your dog to, the better understanding of the "place" concept your dog will have.
This is the foundation training that allows us to showcase such great attention from our dogs at a distance as they're understanding develops.
The "place" command also becomes useful to center the dogs energy so that you can re-direct it at will. As well as, providing a target for the dog helping in the understanding to go out away from the handler.
This is a skill my puppy will be drawing on as he moves along in his journey in becoming another Sit Means Sit super star.
